Colors are accentuated by the use of a polarizing filter. As I mentioned in this post, Tashkorgan is the last major town one passes through before crossing into Pakistan on the Karakoram Highway. The major attraction in the town is the ruins of an old stone city and fortress dating back nearly a thousand years. Scenes from the town and the stone city can be seen in the 2007 film The Kite Runner (details about the filming and some images here). When I saw the film over a year after my trip to China, I was excited to recognize Tashkorgan, Kashgar, and various places where I spend time here in Northern California (Berkeley, Oakland, Newark, etc.).
